Stock certificate for 100 shares in the Yreka Railroad Company, made out to James M. Vance in 1888. No. 144 issued. Signed by secretary Fred Auteumeth and president J. Churchill. Uncancelled. Great vignette of a train. Trimmed tight at top; generally good condition, some light foxing at left. Great condition for its age! The Yreka Railroad Co. was incorporated in May 1888 opened in January 1889, connecting Yreka to the Southern Pacific Company lessor Central Pacific Railroad ( former California and Oregon Railroad). Decision to build the Yreka Railroad was partly due to the Southern Pacific's decision to bypass Yreka in favor of a shorter, and more level route through the Shasta Valley and the city of Montague. Citizens of Yreka formed their own railroad so they wouldn't be without one. Used to move passengers and local freight. In August 1933, was re-incorporated as the Yreka Western Railroad Company.
