Yuba County Directory and Handy Book of Reference for 1903--1904 . Containing the names, occupations and addresses of residents of the City of Marysville, and of the Different towns and hamlets of Yuba County, together with a brief description of these different places, the distance and direction from Marysville and the facilities for communication. Statistical Information embracing the churches, schools, fraternal societies, social and civil organizations and including much information needed in every day affairs. The City and County officials, police and fire departments, routes of travel, distances and fares, altitudes, rainfall, political statistics, etc., etc. Compiled and published by The Appeal Publishing Company. Marysville, California. 116 pages. Back board split at inside hinge but attached. Binding has been re-taped. Pink paper covers on boards printed on front with 2 ads and title of directory, and 2 ads on reverse. Some stains and discoloration inside front cover and 1st page, both ads. Some color printing on ads throughout. Table of Contents and Index of Advertisers in front. First signature stitching is loose, visible and splitting at spine but still attached. Select ads printed on colored paper throughout. Many ads feature a printed photograph of proprietor, a trend at the time. Page 8 lists Salaries of City Official. Interestingly, the Mayor and the Councilmen only earned $5 per annum, the lowest salaries. The Clerk and Assessor was the highest paid official, earning $1500, with the Gardener, Captain of the Chain Gang, Scavengers and Librarian all falling in the middle, and all earning more than lawyers and Judges. The entire list of official positions number fewer than 25 job titles, many singular. It seems positions requiring the greatest training, education and technical skill, and those with the greatest risk of harm associated (police, fire departments, etc.) were paid the most, while the bureaucrats were paid the least. As fair as this seems, one problem is apparent: those who were the least useful and least paid, had the most power to change the flow chart and adjust the pay grades, which may explain why the entire system flipped upside down since 1903 and we see the opposite today: the most skilled and important position like teachers, farmers, clerks, etc., are now valued (and paid) the least while useless bureaucrats collect ridiculously high salaries. Directories like this are often untapped resources of valuable insights, information and research often difficult, if not impossible, to find elsewhere. Please inspect the photos carefully for condition details.
