Lot of 9. 1) Yuba Mining Company. Dateline Timbuctoo. No. 29, issued for 100 shares to GA Moore in 1864. Signed by the president and secretary. Not cancelled. Black border and print, green background, eagle vignette. 25 cent adhesive revenue stamp. Folds, portion missing bottom center. Rare. This has long been presented as a Timbuctoo mining company, though newspaper research explains why the stock says "Nevada Territory." While the company's office was in Timbuctoo, the mining property was in the Washington District of Lander County, Nevada Territory! Timbuctoo is an unusual place to have a mining office. Thriving during the era of hydraulic mining, this Sierra Nevada town of 1,200 pioneers contained a church, a theater, stores, hotels, saloons, a Wells Fargo office, and the Stewart Brothers store. The town of Timbuctoo got its name from a nearby ravine that was used for hydraulic mining as early as 1850; the ravine was named Timbuctoo after an African American who was one of the first miners of the area. Extensive hydraulic mining tailings remain throughout the region as evidence of its lively pioneer past. According to Tingley, the Washington District of Lander County was located on the western slope of the Toiyabe Range about 25 miles south of Austin. It was also known as the San Juan Canyon District. 2) Excelsior Water & Mining Company. "Works in Yuba & Nevada Counties, Cal." (printed at bottom center). No. 628, issued in 1879 for 100 shares. Signed by the president and secretary, not cancelled. Vignette of Native American on horse. Pinholes, folds. 3) Turner Gold Mining Company. Marysville. Four stocks, 3 issued 1892-93 and one unissued.
