This item was purchased from a frequent, early traveler who had several of these in his collection. It is not carved, but a Terra Cotta clay fired hairless dog. This is a rare oven fired piece. Most are rock carved. Mexican Colima Dog terracotta effigy vessel. Among the Mexicans (Mayans) of highland Mexico, dogs were associated with the deity Xolotl, the god of death. This deity and a dog were believed to lead the soul on its journey to the underworld. The canine's rotund body may suggest its value as food for the posthumous soul. 5.5" h x 8" l x 4" w.
