An important group of philatelic covers from several zeppelins and blimps, the very last of their era.
1. LZ 126, the USS Los Angeles. German built, hence the LZ number, First flight August 27, 1924 from Germany to Lakehurst, NJ. An experimental US military zeppelin. Decommissioned in 1932, recommissioned in 1933 after the crash of the Akron, dismantled in 1939. Four covers, 1925.
2. LZ 130. Four German philatelic covers, c1938. Sometimes known as "Graf Zeppelin 2"
3. USS Akron. 5 philatelic covers, c 1932.
4. USS Relief, philatelic cover, c1934.
After the crash of the Akron and the Hindenburg, the world abandoned the concept of commercial air travel by gas filled airships. It became the era of airplanes, jets and space ships.
