Edward J. Muybridge stereoview No. 262, c.1869. View of exterior to Metropolitan Theatre with horse-drawn cart in front. Medium contrast. According to Mautz, Muybridge operated Helios--the Flying Studio with Silas Selleck. Muybridge moved to San Francisco in 1855 and established a bookstore. From 1858-1864, he travelled between New York and England before returning to SF. Like Watkins, he produced mammoth plate photographs of Yosemite. He is considered by many to be the father of the motion picture for his invention of the zoopraxiscope. According to the Sacramento Daily Union (7/4/1861), this theater was built on the site of an older theater of the same name, and opened on July 1st, 1861. The Metropolitan and equally famous Maguire’s Opera House were closed in 1873 due to the cutting through of Montgomery Avenue, now known as Columbus Avenue. However, a portion of the Metropolitan stood until the big fire of 1906. (Prag Collection) Date: Location: San Francisco, California HWAC # 54726
