Photograph is 5.25" x 8.5" and was done by E.W. Baker, Photographer in Virginia City (identified by stamp on reverse). No. 6, Hale & Norcross Mine Val City Nev. Light to medium contrast. This mounted photograph was taken at the time of Hale & Norcross "Bonanza." While the true Comstock Bonanza discovery occurred in 1873, mining at greater depths continued into the 1880s due to the deep shafts (Combination, Osbiston) and heavy pumping of water. By making connections with the Combination Shaft, the H&N was able to sink its incline shaft to 3,200 feet. In the summer of 1885, there were reports of a significant ore body discovery at the 3,000 foot level of the H&N. This was picked up and spread by newspapers, causing the stock to double. However, the ore was "found to be bunchy and of no particular value." [History of the Comstock Lode, Smith]. Provenance: Ayer Family Estate.
