This is a mounted albumen photograph of a cowboy and a horse. Pen writing at the bottom identifies the horse as Chapeau, "The pride of the " 70 Outfit." In the bottom left corner is: "Taken at Soda Springs, Idaho, June 21, 1890." The man is not identified. Photo is 6.25 x 8.5" on 8 x 10" mount. Paper residue on reverse. Some stains. Please inspect. We believe this photo is of the Two-Bar 70 Ranch (hence the [" 70] in the caption) that was located along the Snake River near Soda Springs and founded by William E. Hawks in the 19th century. His son, William E. Hawks Jr., later became a large collector of Western historical items, and dubbed himself the "Historian of the Plains." [Referenced in "Riata & Spurs," Siringo, 1927]
