Includes: 18x receipts for members' dues, dates range 1866-1879; 4x unissued receipts for for the Alturas IOOF; Certificate for Veteran Jewel or Veteran Button for a Member Initiated, issued to J.H.C. Bivan(?) on November 12, 1887. Embossed seal, fine; Alturas Lodge, No. 80, IOOF Request to Join from Arcadio Bustillos; 3x Annual Relief Report for the Alturas Lodge No. 80, dated 1875, 1885, and 1890; 1x Annual Relief Report for the Polar(?) Peak Lodge No. 91, dated 1877; 1x hand written receipt for $11.00 for refreshments served to the lodge by B.H. Barnes(?); 1x receipt for Bald Mountain IOOF Lodge No. 140 for $31.00; 1x Deed, from La Porte Water District to George Fraser and Ellen J. Fraser, dated 12 July 1964, has US IR Documentary $0.55 stamp, red, hand cancelled, folds, embossed seal of Plumas Country; 1x hand written letter by Dixon Brabban and committee to the Alturas Lodge No. 80, explaining their investigation into the character of G.W. Meylert(?) and recommending him for reinstatement; 1x hand written letter on Hall of Alturas No. 80 letterhead, directed to the Grand Vice Grand of Brownsville Lodge No. 283, in which the Alturas lodge was giving $48.00 back because of the death of a member (H.B. Clemans(?)), signed by John Hillman as secretary; 1x handwritten letter to the Officers and Brothers of Alturas Lodge No. 80, regarding the case of Brother P.G.J.T. Demaster. The letter describes the charges against Demaster, which include embezzlement, gambling, and false pretenses, which are unbecoming of a Brother, dated January 10, 1865, signed by M.M. Engel and T.H. Auerbach(?); 1x Alturas Lodge No. 80, benefits receipt, paying $10.00 to R.D. Bosworth for one weeks benefits. Signed by Dixon Brabban, secretary, and B.W. Barnes, treasurer. From oac.cdlib.org: The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal society, was introduced to America by Englishman Thomas Wildey in 1819. The Order was established in San Francisco, Calif. in 1849, and Alturas Lodge was established December 8, 1858 in La Porte, Plumas County. The Lodge served not only as a social and relief organization, but also provided an avenue for justice. Charges of unbecoming conduct brought against a member by an individual or by the lodge were tried by a committee. Sustained charges could mean expulsion and the loss of relief benefits.
