Issued 1911 Keller and Indiana Smelting stock with nice smelter vignette. Vertical crease with small tears and light right stain. This property was a part of the San Poil River floodplain. Historical sources indicate a small placer mining boom in the San Poil River basin opened up CIR to mining operations in 1898. R.L. Boyle and his Keller and Indiana Consolidated Smelting Company (KICS) constructed the smelter to process copper ore from the nearby Manila Mine. During construction of the smelter, a dam was built across the San Poil river about a mile and a half of "Old" Keller to divert water into a flume to generate electricity for smelting operations. A small sampling mill was also constructed adjacent to the smelter. Locally mined ore and coke use for fuel were transported to the subject property and was stored in large wooden bins which were stockpiled while smelter was under construction in anticipation of future operations. It was estimated that between 1,000 tons of ore was stored in the bins. Mr. Boyle died shortly after the smelter was constructed. The smelter remained idle for several years because KICS lacked sufficient funds for smelter operations following Mr. Boyle's death, which was further complication by a drop in mineral prices.
