Lot of 3 North American Land Co. stocks issued in 1795 and signed by Founding Father Robert Morris. 1) One is issued to James Rees. Signed by Robert Morris as president and James Marshall as secretary. Morris' signature is not cancelled! We could not locate any information about James Rees. 2) One is issued to Dr. Enoch Edwards, the well-known personal surgeon of George Washington during the American Revolution and in later years. Signed by Morris but there is a hole in the signature. 3) The last is issued to Bird, Savage & Birds of London. Signed by Morris but the signature is pen cancelled. All are 9.75 x 12" Robert Morris was the financier of the American Revolution, and one of only two Founding Fathers to sign all three key American documents: The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Articles of Confederation. Morris was the first to use the dollar sign in official documents. But his involvement with the North American Land Company literally destroyed his life. During the Revolutionary War, Morris, an extremely wealthy Philadelphian, kept his friend George Washington and his troops fed, clothed, and armed. After the war Morris tried his hands in other ventures including the largest land trust in American History, and is one of the first publicly traded Real Estate companies. To make a long story short, his investments turned bad and the harder he tried to reverse his fortunes the deeper in debt he became. So in 1798 the financier of the American Revolution and signer of the Declaration of Independence found himself in debtors prison! The financial Panic of 1796 led to his financial ruin and he was incarcerated for debt in the Prune Street Prison. James Marshall (brother of Chief Justice John Marshall) was his son-in-law and made a valiant but unsuccessful trip to Europe to gain supporters. Please inspect; rare chance to buy three!
